Five months today. The other day, someone asked Robert how old Katie was, and he said, "Six months." He didn't believe me when I corrected him and said that she wasn't even five months old yet. Even after I reminded him of her birthday, he asked if I didn't get March mixed up with May. Yes, I may have pregnancy/newborn brain, but I think I remember what month my daughter was born in!
A corner of her bottom left tooth poked through a few days ago. She's been drooling forever, but now we can finally say it's because she's teething. Teething is the greatest diagnosis for any syptom. Drooling? Teething. Grouchy? Teething. Not sleeping? Teething. Crying? Teething. Rash? Teething. And the best part is, it lasts for two years, so babies always have a built-in excuse for any misbehaviour.
And misbehaving, she has been. She always wants to be held, preferably by Mommy, although she laughs most at Michael and smiles most at Daddy. Every since she got that tooth she's been waking up at 4am to eat. She was doing so well. It had been almost a month this time that she was sleeping through the night, and then she goes and ruins it all. She has also been really bad about going down for her naps. (Of course, today she was an angel - she must have known that I was going to blog about it.)
Her favourite thing to do now is grab my hair with both fists. I am going to be bald within a few months if this continues. I always give her a firm, "No" and yank my hair out of her clutches, but she has yet to get the message. It's even worse when I have it pulled up, because then she grabs the little wisps of hair and yanks and that hurts even more.
She's lucky she's so adorable. Oh, and Robert did actually get Michael's blog up and running. It's at www.michael.hurdman.com

Oops
You can tell the blog is way overdue when I try to find the link on the pulldown menu and it's not even there anymore because I haven't been here in FOREVER! Well, it seems like forever in baby time. I mean, a month is more than 20% of her entire life!
So, let me think about what has happened since my birthday. Michael started Kindergarten. He loves it. We've decided that Michael should have his own blog now because he just has so many stories to tell. We'll see when that one gets started...
Katie had her second set of shots on September 2nd. She weighed almost 18lbs (8.10kgs) and was 27 inches long. Still off the charts, but perfect weight for her height. It was scheduled for the same day that Jeremy started playschool ("library school") with grandma, and Michael was in school, so I took her all by myself. Of course, she slept for eight hours the night before so I couldn't even complain to the nurse about what a bad sleeper she was! She just smiled and cooed at the nurse the whole time. She even smiled after the first shot! She whimpered after the second, and started crying after the third, but quieted within a few seconds. She has got to be the happiest little girl ever.
That eight hour night was not repeated and she was still getting up multiple times a night when we went to my parent's house the night before Labour Day. That night she was up three times. I was not impressed. On Labour Day, we went to Lake Minnewaka and had a lot of fun. It was a gorgeous day and the boys loved throwing rocks in the lake and climbing all over the place. They even went over some stepping stones to get to a little island (but of course fell in and got their socks and shoes wet!). Katie was very good the whole time. She loves being outside, as long as she's being held. That night, she tried getting up at 11pm again to feed, and I sent Robert in to tell her to forget it. I guess she got the message, because she then slept all the way until 6am. The cat was out of the bag. She was perfectly capable of sleeping through the night!
The next night, I fed her at 6:50pm and then rushed to the school council meeting (arriving fifteen minutes late). It dragged on and I volunteered to be the new chairperson just to keep things moving along (no one else volunteered even after they had formally asked twice). I rushed home at 10pm, sure that she would be screaming bloody murder because she was starving, but Robert said she went down at 8pm and slept the whole time. I didn't wake her up and she slept all the way until 6am again!
Lately, she's been going to sleep around 7:30pm and getting up at 6am. I would prefer another hour on both of those times, but I'm not complaining too much. Robert and I are actually going on a date tomorrow without any of the kids because she goes down so early that we can go out after she goes to bed. (We tried to remember the last time we went on a date without any of the kids, and couldn't remember. It must have been before Katie was born. Maybe when we went to Banff together?)
She's become very interested in food. Everytime I hold her and eat or drink, she always tries to grab for it and watches me intently. Last Saturday, we were at Bowness Park and my dad had bought me a package of Nibs and we were eating some. Robert had the brilliant idea of giving her one to hold and suck on with her thumb. She LOVED it and screamed her guts out when we finally took it away. She was not impressed with us.
Yesterday, we were at Robert's parent's and gave her an apple slice to chew on. She loved that as well. The problem was that she drooled so much all over it that it was impossible to hold and she would scream whenever it slipped out of her hand or our hands. We then took pity on her and tried feeding her some mashed up banana. She doesn't know how to swallow from a spoon yet and it would go in, then come out, then I'd scoop it back in, she'd spit it back out, in, out, in, out, until finally about half would end up in her while the other half was on her bib. She loved it though and got really mad when I was too frustrated to continue. Today, her poop was full of banana.
Today my Facebook status read: Trina McIntyre Hurdman has the cutest little cutie cute who ever was cute.

Just a Little Sick
Ever since coming back from Edmonton, Katie has been a lot more fussy about going to sleep. Tuesday was the worst. It took me 30-45 minutes to get her to sleep at every nap. I would have her fast asleep, try to put her down, and she would immediately start screaming. I would have to do it over and over again. I noticed she had a little fever that evening. Does 38.2 even constitute a fever? She was happy when awake like usual and didn't have any other symptoms besides the fussiness when going to sleep. I guess she was just sick enough to torture us all through the night. I put her down at 10pm that night. She was up at 1am and didn't go to sleep again until 4am when I fed her again. I had her for the first hour and Robert took her for the other two while she just screamed at him because he refused to bounce her up and down. The she was up again at 6:30, then at 8 and didn't go down for a nap until 9:15am. Then she was up at 10am, but then she went to sleep at 11:30 for three and a half hours. After that, she was much better. However, she has aparently forgotten how to sleep through the night as she woke up every four hours. Not too bad, in comparison to the previous night, but a far cry from the 8-10 hours that she used to do...
Wedding Plans
On the way to camp this morning, Michael was being silly and making Naomi laugh.
Naomi: Michael, you're so funny. That's why I'm going to marry you.
Michael: I'm going to marry Katie.
Benton (being the wise eight year old): You can't marry your sister. Anyways, you're not old enough to get married.
Michael: I already know that. I know how old I have to be to be married.
(Well I'm glad he does, because I have no idea!)
Michael teaching Benton and Naomi how to make the baby smile:
"You have to say - Yes, baby. Yes, baby. Yes, baby. - over and over again" (In a super high pitched voice.)
Katie actually fell asleep on her own on the way home from camp with only a couple of little cries. That was a first! I put her straight in her room in her car seat. I wasn't going to mess with a good thing.

An Exhausting Day
Yesterday, my little angel decided to eat every two hours and only nap for maybe a half hour at a time between feeds. After nursing, burping, pooping, and changing diapers, there wasn't much time before she was fussing to be put back to sleep. This continued all day. We went to IKEA in the afternoon because I had a doctor's information session to go to, which turned out to be an hour and a half in a boiling hot room. It was not fun having a fussing, then sleeping, then nursing baby in there, even sitting right by the fan. Then she still went at it until 1am when Daddy finally got her down for the "night." She still got up at her usual 5:30am. Sigh...
She has been a lot better today, but I feel like I should knock on wood. Oops... I hear her crying now.
More special words from the boys:
"Kitten pool" for the kids pool at Southland Leisure Centre.
"Mystery mark" for a question mark.
Michael talking about his first day of camp:
"We had a race."
Dad, remembering not to promote competition by asking if he won, replies, "Was it fun?"
Michael: Yes, I was the fastest. Well, some other boys were faster.
I think we need to work on his comparitives...

Agreeable little Jeremy
Dad (licking out a pot with melted Calebaut chocolate): Mmmm. I'm getting so fat.
Jeremy (wanting to join the conversation): You're right Dad. You're getting fat. SO fat.

Time flies or crawls?
I always feel like I don't know what to write about. Little babies don't seem to change very much from week to week, until one day you look at them and they're already walking... Not that my baby is walking, but she was trying to crawl yesterday. She only got one leg under her, but she managed to scoot forward a few inches. That hand was just out of reach! Whenever I used to put her on her stomach for "tummy time" she would just lie there and suck her fist. Now, she's lifting her head up and moving her arms and legs around.
She has started putting weight on her feet and likes sitting up with only minimal back support. She seems to like going outside and fusses if we try to hold her facing us. She wants to see what's going on everywhere. Unfortunately, she can't sit up by herself, so when she's in the stroller, she's still basically facing the sky, which is usually very bright, so she doesn't enjoy it very much. Luckily, she's good about keeping her hat on (for now). And she looks so cute in her little pink hat, smiling at everyone that we don't mind that we have to hold her the whole time we're outside.
She is still very good at getting her left thumb in her mouth while in her bed, but when she goes to sleep, she likes to be curled up on our chest, sucking a few fingers from her right hand. She also goes down to sleep facing right. I don't know how she got hooked on that left thumb, but if it helps her sleep, we're all for it. She's still terrible with a soother and the only time we ever use it is in the car. She can only find her thumb when she's lying down, so when she's tired or grumpy in the car, she just screams.
I think she's starting to prefer mommy. When she's really tired, she screams at daddy and takes forever to go to sleep, whereas I can get her calmed down within seconds (although not asleep - that can take up to an hour when she's really worked up). It's kind of nice to finally have a child who prefers me, although she is really heavy and my arm starts to cramp up after awhile during her evening fussy period. Most of the time, she is happy and loves smiling at everyone around. Many people have commented that she interacts more like a six month old than a two month old. Her little squeals of delight and various cooing noises are the cutest sounds ever. It's impossible to not kiss her all day long!
We were at a ward barbeque last Saturday and she was the hit of the party. Well, maybe not quite, but she was being held by other people for most of the evening and everyone agrees that she is supercute. For the last hour, she was asleep on Julie Baker's chest as Julie rocked in a rocking chair and chatted. I kept on going over to check on her, but she was perfectly content. About fifteen minutes before her next feed, I had to take her away so that we could get home. When I went to get her, Julie held her tighter and said, "I don't think I'm ready for you to go home yet." She is adorable when she's asleep.
Notes about the boys:
The other night, Jeremy made a comment (I forget what about) and I said, "You're right." He immediately replied, "I'm always right!"
He did the same thing the next day. It's pretty funny hearing a two and a half year old say that.
Special words the boys have:
"Jumpolina" for trampoline.
"Library school" for playschool at the community centre.
"Friend" for any child at the playground, no matter how old.
Just now, as I was changing the baby's diaper upstairs, I heard the boys playing in the front closet. Michael came up to check on me and went down the stairs with me. As I opened the front closet to check on Jeremy, Michael observed, "What a mess! I didn't do it. Jeremy didn't do it. I think the baby did it." Nice try destructo boys.
